Nutritional Lithium: An Often-Overlooked Trace Mineral
Lithium occurs naturally in the environment and is present in varying concentrations in soil, water, and certain foods. As a result, dietary exposure can vary by geography and food source.
Ecological research conducted in Texas has examined this geographic variation directly. A 1990 study of 27 Texas counties found that suicide, homicide, and rape rates were significantly higher in counties whose water supplies contained little or no lithium compared to counties with higher natural lithium levels (Schrauzer & Shrestha, Biological Trace Element Research, 1990). A larger 2013 follow-up study analyzing 3,123 water samples across 226 Texas counties found that higher naturally occurring lithium levels in the public water supply were associated with lower county-level suicide rates (Blüml et al., Journal of Psychiatric Research, 2013). These are population-level, correlational findings from public health data — they do not establish that any individual is lithium deficient, and they do not show that VitalithMD® or any dietary supplement treats, prevents, or cures suicide, violence, or any mental health condition.
Scientific literature has explored trace and low-level lithium exposure in a variety of biological contexts. This research is distinct from prescription lithium therapy, which uses substantially different doses and is medically supervised. Research on lithium generally should not be interpreted as evidence that VitalithMD® prevents or treats any disease.
Areas Explored in the Scientific Literature
Researchers have investigated lithium in relation to normal nervous system biology, cellular signaling, oxidative processes, and healthy aging. These areas remain subjects of scientific study. The studies discussed on this site were not conducted on VitalithMD® specifically and do not establish that this product prevents, treats, cures, or reverses any medical condition.
Inside the Formula
Cellular coverage. VitalithMD® supplies vitamins, minerals, and nutritional cofactors involved in normal cellular processes, including energy metabolism, antioxidant defenses, and tissue maintenance.
Trace mineral nutrition. VitalithMD® includes 5 mg of lithium orotate as a source of nutritional lithium within a broader daily multivitamin and mineral formula. Trace minerals are part of the nutritional environment that supports normal body function.
Methylation support. Methylfolate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 participate in normal methylation and metabolic pathways and support normal nervous system function.
Membrane and mineral balance. Vitamin D and K2 support normal calcium metabolism, while omega-3 lipids help support healthy cell membranes and normal cellular communication.
